Heartsaver® for K-12 Schools
Heartsaver for K-12 Schools uses the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Course to teach K-12 students, faculty (teachers and coaches), and staff (an employee of K-12 school or K-12 school system) critical skills needed to respond to and manage a cardiac arrest, choking, or first aid emergency in the first few minutes until EMS arrives. This course teaches adult CPR and AED use. Child CPR AED, infant CPR, and first aid modules are optional. Students may also learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock, and other first aid emergencies. This course is presented in several modules, giving schools and AHA instructors the flexibility to teach the course over several class periods.
After successfully completing the Heartsaver CPR AED course, students should be able to:
- describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
- explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
- recognize when someone needs CPR
- perform high-quality CPR for an adult alone or as a team member during multi-rescuer CPR (child and infant CPR modules are optional)
- give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a barrier device for all age groups
- demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult (child and infant AED modules are optional)
- describe when and how to help a choking adult or child (infant choking module is optional).
Upon successful completion of each course, including relevant skills testing, students receive a course completion card that is valid for two years.
**Student Manual will be included
